Pilot ignition 101, stoves and fireplaces E-mail

Igniting the pilot is easy.

The first step is to ensure that the main gas supply valve is in the open position. For propane, the tank must contain at least 20% of its capacity in order for your unit to function properly. Propane tanks used for stoves and fireplaces are equipped with an indicator which allows you to determine the gas level.

Step two, locate the second supply valve under the fireplace, or behind the unit, in the case of a free standing stove. This valve must also be in the open position. The open position is perpendicular to the supply hose, in other words, in a straight line.

The next step is to light the pilot. To do so you must follow these steps: gently press on the ‘ON OFF PILOT’ button and turn it counter-clockwise approximately a quarter of a turn until the word Pilot is aligned with the position line. You must keep this button pushed in for the ignition procedure. With your free hand you will then press on the lighting button which is similar to a barbecue lighter and produces a spark which will light the pilot. The lighting button is generally black or red with a lightning bolt on it. Please remember that during this whole process you must keep the pressure on the ‘ON OFF PILOT’ button as this is what supplies the gas for the pilot to ignite.

Gas valveYou may need to press several times on the lighting button before the pilot lights. Once it’s lit, you will need to continue holding the ‘ON OFF PILOT’ button for at least 30 seconds until the sensor is hot enough to maintain the gas supply on its own. The pilot light is actually a safety measure since the gas valve will not supply the burner if it is not ignited.

You can now let go of the button and the pilot will remain lit on its own. Then, you will gently push on the ‘ON OFF PILOT’ button again and turn it, still counter-clockwise, until it is in the ON position.

Once these steps are successfully completed, your unit is now ready to be lit by your thermostat, remote control or tip-over button generally located near the valve or on the wall in the room where the unit is installed. And voila, you have now mastered the art of lighting your gas stove or fireplace.

To avoid problems and enjoy your investment, we strongly recommend that you take advantage of the annual servicing offered by your retailer. A well-maintained and carefully adjusted unit will give you efficiency and the peace of mind you are looking for.

When shutting off the pilot at the end of the heating season, we suggest that you close the supply valve under your fireplace or behind your woodstove first and let the pilot put itself out slowly with the lack of gas supply. Then, simply push the ‘ON OFF PILOT’ button and turn it to the OFF position and that’s it. Obviously, you can also choose to close the main valve on the propane tank outside to finalize the process.

I sincerely hope that this was helpful and hope you will master these procedures quickly.  I wish you all a happy heating season and do not hesitate to share this article with friends and family by referring them to Bien-O-Chaud.com.
